Permits & Licenses
Business License
The City of Wetaskiwin requires all new and existing businesses to obtain and maintain their business license in order to operate within the City. Businesses that are located outside of Wetaskiwin but do business within City boundaries are required to complete an Out-of-Town business license.
- Business Licenses are valid for up to one year, expiring on December 31st.
- It is the business owner's responsibility to renew their business license.
- Business License Bylaw 1507-01 with Amendments 1662-06 &1933-19
- Taxi/Ride for Hire Bylaw 1889-17
- Taxi/Ride for Hire Businesses must follow both the Business License Bylaw & Taxi/Ride for Hire Blyaw.

Apply for a Business License:
This section contains information on how to apply for a business license as a resident and a out-of-town business.
Businesses Located Within WetaskiwinAll businesses, apart from non-profit organizations, are required to obtain a business license before operating their business. Step 1. Determine what zoning district your business resides in.

Vendor Permit
What is a Vendor Permit?
If you're a food vendor attending a special event or otherwise, you will require an approved vendor permit and business license to operate within the City of Wetaskiwin. Vending permits are required to allow vendors to sell food and non-alcoholic beverages using a mobile format while ensuring public safety.
Special event non-profit means any community event or festival being managed or controlled by a non-profit organization which may have one or more vendors. All vendors attending a special event must have vendor permit application, business license application, and payment submitted to Engineering & Development at least 5 business days prior to the event.

Non-Profit Organizations
Charitable or non-profit organizations conducting business or fundraising within the City of Wetaskiwin are exempt from licensing requirements.

Renew a Business License
All business licenses expire on December 31st. Current business license holders will be sent a yearly invoice at the end of each calendar year with the required business license fee for the upcoming year.

Does my Business Require Permits?
Some businesses occupying a new space may be required to obtain additional permits. The following information outlines situations where a business owner may need to obtain permits.
Non-Residential Renovation:
- Businesses that plan on doing interior renovations may be required to obtain a building permit and additional permits such as, electrical, gas, plumbing, etc.
- Commercial Renovation permit packages can be found within the Permits, Development, & Construction tab.

Change of Use Permits:
- Change of use permits are required for businesses that are moving their business into a new location and the proposed business has a Use type that is different from the existing Use type. (Ex. a retail business would require a change of use permit if the new business location was previously a restaurant.)
- The change of use permit reviews parking and land use regulations required by the land use bylaw and ensures that businesses meet the requirements.
- Change of Use permit packages can be found within the Permits, Development, & Construction tab.

Home-Based Business
This section covers home-based businesses, the types of home-based businesses in the City of Wetaskiwin, and how to apply.
Thinking about operating a home-based business?
All home-based businesses and home offices require an approved development permit and business license prior to opening. In the City of Wetaskiwin, the Land Use Bylaw 1804-13 lists Home Office, Minor Home-Based Business, and Major Home-Based Business as the three types of home occupation uses.
How to apply for a Home-Based Business:Step 1. Determine what zoning district your property resides in.
Step 2. Determine if your Home-Based Business is Permitted or Discretionary
Step 3: Complete and submit a Home-Based Business application.

Types of Home-Based Businesses in Wetaskiwin:
1. Home Office - Zero (0) business visits per day
Home offices include a dedicated area located in a dwelling which has a phone and/or fax for a registered business entity but where there are no business clients, employees, products or deliveries.

2. Minor Home Based Business - One (1) business visit per day
Minor home based businesses is a development consisting the use of an approved dwelling within a residential building by a resident of that dwelling for one or more businesses. Such businesses shall not require more than one business associated visit per day at that dwelling. The business use must be secondary to the residential use of the building and no aspects of the business operations shall be detectable from outside the property other than an approved sign. The dwelling shall not be used as a workplace for non-resident employees of the business. This use class does not include general retail sales.

Major Home Based Business - One Plus (+1) business visits per day
Major home based businesses is a development consisting of the use of an approved dwelling or accessory building by a resident of that dwelling for one or more business associated visits per day. The business use must be secondary to the residential use of the building and shall not change the residential character of the dwelling or accessory building with the exception of an approved sign. This use class includes bed and breakfast facilities but does not include general retail sales.
