Intermediate First Aid (IFA) provides comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR. This course is for those who want an in-depth understanding of first aid such as: medical/legal aspects, spinal injuries, heat or cold injuries, bone and joint injuries, abdominal and chest injuries, burns, and medical emergencies.
CPR-C Covers all aspects of CPR skills and theory for adult, child, and infant casualties, including two-rescuer CPR skills. CPR-C includes an introduction to the purpose of an AED and how they are used.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The online component must be completed prior to the start of the classroom session. You will receive an email from the Canadian Red Cross with a link to complete your online component. Participants who do not complete the online component will not be allowed to complete the classroom session and will not be eligible for a Credit or Refund

IMPORTANT NOTE: If your certification was issued by another company approved to deliver workplace Intermediate first Aid courses (E.G, Saint John’s ambulance, the Lifesaving Society, Etc.) you can recertify your certification through the Red Cross. If your certification is past its expiry date (3 years after its issue date), you will have to re-take an original Intermediate First Aid course. If your certification is still current and approaching expiry, you can take the recertification course.

Bronze Medallion challenges the candidate both mentally and physically. Judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness – the four components of water rescue – form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. Candidates acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on, and around the water. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for assistant lifeguard training in Bronze Cross.
Prerequisite(s): Bronze Star (need not be current) or minimum 13 years of age at the time of the exam. Must be comfortable and confident in deep water.
Bronze Cross

Bronze Cross begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities as assistant lifeguards. Candidates strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for advanced training in the Society’s National Lifeguard and leadership certification programs.
Prerequisite(s): Bronze Medallion (need not be current), current Alberta workplace approved Intermediate First Aid, and minimum 13 years of age at the time of the exam.

National Lifeguard
40-hour course

Course delivered through the Lifesaving Society
The Lifesaving Society's National Lifeguard (NL) certification builds on the fundamental skills taught in the Bronze Medallion and Cross courses. This program develops a sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, builds physical endurance in the water and teaches the mature judgment needed to be a successful lifeguard. Participants will learn how to safely carry and remove distressed swimmers from the water, treat individuals in major first aid situations, and provide follow-up care for the aquatic environment. This course has 40 hours of instructional time. The time will be shared between the classroom and the swimming pool. 100% attendance is required. Homework assignments may be given out during the 40-hour instructional time. Candidates should bring a pen, extra paper, a water bottle, snacks, lunch/dinner, extra towels, swimsuit, deck appropriate footwear and goggles. Those with long hair should bring hair elastics or wear a swim cap. Completion of this course is based on the instructor’s evaluation and completing all Alberta Lifesaving Societies Standards.

National Lifeguard – Recert

The purpose of a National Lifeguard (NL) Recert is to reconfirm that National Lifeguards can perform at the National Lifeguard standard. Candidates are expected to actively participate in 100% of the National Lifeguard Recertification. Physical standards, Lifeguard Judgment and Lifeguard Skills will be evaluated throughout the recertification.
Prerequisite(s): Currently or previously have held a National Lifeguard Certificate and a current workplace approved Intermediate First Aid.

Swim Instructor and Lifesaving Instructor

Swim Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the Swim for Life® and Canadian Swim Patrol programs. The Swim Instructor course prepares Instructors to apply level 1 leadership competencies and strategies while teaching and evaluating.
Lifesaving Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the Canadian Swim Patrol, Bronze Medals, Distinction, Boat Rescue and Lifesaving Society CPR programs. The Lifesaving Instructor course prepares Instructors to apply level 1 leadership competencies and strategies while teaching and evaluating. Lifesaving Instructor certification is the prerequisite for other Lifesaving Society instructor certifications. Certification in Alberta and Northwest Territories includes CPR Instructor certification.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Instructor candidates will learn the fundamental knowledge to teach swimming lessons and advanced courses during each classroom session. Outside of scheduled classroom time, Instructor candidates will be paired with one of our instructors to teach portions of our scheduled lessons. This will help the instructor candidate gain experience in and become more comfortable teaching swimming lessons.
