Garbage & Recycling
Residential Waste collection, disposal and recycling are funded entirely by the charges reflected on a customer’s utility bill. The landfill is funded entirely by user fees (tipping charges), and the recycle depot is funded by a combination of residential utility charges, a 1% levy on the commercial tax base and a County contribution. Please contact the Waste and Recycling Department at (780) 361-4448 for more information.

The City of Wetaskiwin currently has two automated residential collection trucks. Wetaskiwin is divided into four sections, and each section has a different collection day. Each truck averages between 425 to 450 pick-ups per day and unloads only once at the end of the day.

The Wetaskiwin Landfill is open Monday through Saturday, 9:30 am till 5:30 pm in the summer and 9 am to 5 pm in the winter. The landfill's hours are extended during the City's annual Spring Clean Up and Fall Clean Up.

Every load brought to the landfill is weighed in and directed to the proper disposal area. Household garbage goes to the working face with separate areas for metal; tires; compost; concrete; asphalt; and clean wood/branches. The working face is packed daily and covered every two days.

On average 17,909 tonnes of waste is delivered to the Wetaskiwin Sanitary Landfill every year. Of that amount, 9,383 tonnes (52%) is recycled or otherwise diverted from the working face.

Recycle Depot
The City of Wetaskiwin's Recycle Depot was established in 1998 to divert waste from the landfill's working face. The recycle depot collects nine types of recyclables and green waste for composting.

The products for recycling include tin cans, glass, 1-7 mixed plastics, corrugated cardboard, sorted office paper, newspaper, mixed paper which includes any wax coated cardboard such as cereal boxes, e-waste, car batteries and green waste. The recyclables are marketed directly to recycling companies; the green waste is hauled to the landfill for composting. The recycling depot recycles 1606 tonnes of material annually, representing a total diversion of 48%.
