Personal Biography
Councillor Wayne Neilson was raised in Lethbridge, Alberta. After graduating high school, Wayne completed his Bachelor of Education at the University of Lethbridge. He then began his teaching career in Brooks, Alberta, and, after five years, he went back to the University of Alberta and obtained his Masters of Education. Wayne was employed as a teacher, vice principal, principal and assistant superintendent over the course of his 40-year education career. 

Wayne is married to Carol and they have two children who are both teachers, as well as married to teachers. Wayne & Carol have four grandsons.

Community Involvement
Wayne has been actively involved in the community by teaching stained and fused glass courses, as well as volunteering to coach juvenile girl's basketball. Wayne has spent 40 years coaching high school sports, including basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, and track & field. He has been both president and vice president of the Alberta Schools Athletic Association, which governs all high school sports. Additionally, Wayne has spoken provincially, nationally and internationally on learning and brain research.

Municipal Role
On October 21, 2013, Wayne Neilson was elected to his first term in office as councillor. Wayne currently represents the City of Wetaskiwin on the following municipal boards and committees:
  • Economic Development Committee
  • Joint City / County Committee
  • Joint City / School Board Committee
  • Local Assessment Review Board
  • Memorial Fund Society
  • Wetaskiwin Ashoro Friendship Society

Hobbies / Areas of Enjoyment
Wayne enjoys golf, swimming, stained/fused glass work, coaching, reading and riding his motorcycle.
