Municipal Election

A general election for the City of Wetaskiwin is taking place on October 18, 2021. On this day, voters will cast their ballots to elect: 

  • One (1) Mayor 
  • Six (6) Councillors 

A Senate Election and Referendum Vote will be held in conjunction with the 2021 Alberta municipal elections. For more information please visit Elections Alberta.

What's on the ballot?

 

Senate Election Referendum Election 
  • Electors may vote for three Senate Candidates. Candidates who receive the highest number of votes province-wide will be put forward to the Queens's Privy Council for Canada for Consideration to fill future vacancies related to Alberta in the Canadian Senate. 
  • The Alberta Senate Election Act is provincial legislation and the candidates selected are not binding to the Queen's Privy Council for Canada. 
Voters will get the chance to vote 'yes' or 'no' to the following referendum questions:

  • Equalization - Should section 36(2) of the Constitution Act, 1982 - Parliament and the government of Canada commitment to the principle of making equalization payments - be removed from the constitution? 
  • Daylight Saving Time - Do you want Alberta to adopt year-round Daylight Saving Time, which is summer hours, eliminating the need to change our clocks every year?

Special Ballots

Special Ballots were added to Wetaskiwin’s now-updated Municipal Election Bylaw 1999-21, which was approved by Wetaskiwin City Council at their regular July 19, 2021 Council meeting.

Special Ballot packages—including senate and referendum ballots—will be printed following the release of the official list of election candidates on September 21, 2021. Applications for Special Ballots for the October 18, 2021 municipal election are to be submitted between October 1 and October 16, 2021—no later than 4:00 pm. A Special Ballot package can be requested by calling the City of Wetaskiwin Elections Office at (780) 361-4409 or emailing administration@wetaskiwin.ca. Eligible voters can choose to have their ballot package mailed to them, or they can pick it up at the Elections Office (4705-50 Avenue) between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Eligible voters for the City of Wetaskiwin 2021 Municipal Election can request to vote using a Special (mail-in) Ballot if they are unable to vote at the Advance Vote (October 13, 2021 from 11 am to 8:00 pm) or at a voting station on Election Day (October 18, 2021) because they are: 

  • physically incapacitated (this includes anyone required to isolate due to COVID-19) 
  • out of town and unable to physically visit the local poll stations 
  • An election worker, candidate, official agent or scrutineer located at a voting station other than the one for their designated place of residence
