Emergency Shelter

The City of Wetaskiwin has opened a temporary emergency shelter thanks to funding from the Government of Alberta Community and Social Services Ministry.
Location of Shelter: Wetaskiwin Civic Building (4904 - 51 Street)
Hours of Operation: 7 pm until 8 am every day until the end of April (2019).

Calling All Community Agencies

The City of Wetaskiwin will only be able to operate the emergency shelter until the end of April. If the shelter initiative is to continue past April, it must be managed by a community agency. The City of Wetaskiwin is willing to work with any interested agencies in ensuring the continuation of this service. Please contact Kevin Lucas for details.

Volunteer Staffing

We need people to assist with operating the shelter overnight. Duties include ensuring a calm and safe atmosphere, logging the arrival / departure of volunteers and clients, and keeping the premises tidy. Each evening is divided into two shifts:

  • 7:00 pm to Midnight
  • Midnight to 8:00 am

If you would like to volunteer, please contact Angela at 780.361.4416. You will also need to fill out a volunteer application form, and will be provided with a letter to attain a criminal record and vulnerable sector check at your local R.C.M.P. detachment.
Note: If you have a criminal record and vulnerable sector check that has been completed within the last year, please provide that with your application form.

Food & Drink
Food/beverage items will be gratefully accepted at the Civic Building during the shelter's hours of operation, or at the Manluk Centre (during the day). We are always in need of the following items:

  • Juice boxes
  • Bottled water
  • soft granola bars and other snack items

If you have access to an AHS-approved commercial kitchen and would like to provide a hot meal to those using the shelter, please contact Jessica Maude (meal coordinator volunteer) at 780.678.7674 or by email.

Note: No home-made food will be accepted for donation due to Alberta Health Services regulations. We can accept perishable items or items from a permitted kitchen.

Clothing, Toiletries, Blankets, Etc.
Donations of clothing, toiletries, blankets, etc. will be gratefully accepted at the Civic Building during the shelter’s hours of operation, or at the Manluk Centre (during the day).
Note: Please ensure all donated items are washed and in good condition.

Thank you to all those who have contributed so far! We're still looking into long-term solutions, so please don't be afraid to weigh in with your suggestions/thoughts. It truly takes a community and we think we've got a good one here!

If you have any questions about the emergency shelter, please contact Kevin Lucas, Director of Community Services, at 780.361.4442 or by email
