Domestic Animals & Pest Control

A variety of animals and wildlife call Wetaskiwin home. For information about animals and wildlife that have wandered onto your property or you have noticed in City parks and trails, use the drop-down menus below. 

Enforcement Services investigates and enforces animal-related laws, including the Animal Control Bylaw, Animal Protection Act, and Dangerous Dogs Act. If you have an animal control concern, call 780.361.4401.

Enforcement Services does not pick up stray or loose cats, but residents can borrow humane traps from April 1 to September 30 (weather permitting). Residents are responsible for trapping and taking the animal to the Wetaskiwin Animal Shelter.

Animal impound services are available:

  • Monday to Friday: 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • Saturday and Sunday: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Protective Services also has after-hours access to kennels for emergency impoundments.

Insects, such as wasps, hornets, and bees, on private property are the responsibility of the owner. Call a pest control company to remove them from the property. 

If you notice insects present in City parks, trails, or trees, please call the Parks Department at 780.361.4436 or report them using the Citizen Reporting Tool

Rodents on private property are the owner’s responsibility. Please contact a pest control company to remove them.

If you see a rat in Wetaskiwin, report it right away to our Community Peace Officers at 780.361.4401, as rats are a serious risk to health and safety.
Wildlife Control

All wild animals are unpredictable. For your safety and the animal’s well-being, maintain a safe distance between yourself and any animal encountered. Do not provoke animals, and please don’t feed wildlife.

Skunks and raccoons on private property are the owner’s responsibility. Skunk traps can be rented for a small fee from the County of Wetaskiwin Office. For details, call 780.352.3321.

Please report injured wildlife to Alberta Fish and Wildlife.
