Solar Installation Grant Program

Intake for the owner-occupied residential spots in the Solar Installation Grant Program is now full. Any further applications to this stream will be waitlisted in case a current pre-approved project doesn't go ahead.

There are still four spaces remaining in the business/not-for-profit stream.

Please note that the Solar Installation Grant Program is for residents of Wetaskiwin and is not eligible for those who reside in Wetaskiwin County. Please verify that your address is within the city of Wetaskiwin before applying. For information regarding grants available in the county, please visit the County of Wetaskiwin website.

The Solar Installation Grant Program aims to lower electricity costs for residents, business owners, and not-for-profits by providing funding to help make solar panels more affordable.

The 2025 grant program, funded via a generous anonymous donation, amounts to $75,000. Of that $50,000 is allocated to provide ten $5,000 grants to residential applicants to install a minimum 4kWh solar panel system and five $5,000 grants to business and not-for-profit applicants to install a minimum 5kWh solar panel system. Landlords are also eligible to participate in the program on behalf of rental properties that they own and can apply using the business and not-for-profit application form.

An individual is only eligible to apply for the program once, even if they are an owner of multiple properties within Wetaskiwin.

Grant Applications

To obtain pre-approval for the Solar Installation Grant Program, the appropriate Solar Installation Grant Program Application must be submitted to permits@wetaskiwin.ca or dropped off at Wetaskiwin City Hall (4705 50 Avenue). Applications are accepted and pre-approved on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Application Forms:

Submit a completed Solar Installation Grant Program application and a quote for the minimum required solar panel to permits@wetaskiwin.ca

Planning and Development will review the application and issue pre-approval to the applicant.

The applicant’s contractor applies for development and building permits from Planning and Development and an electrical permit from Superior Safety Codes.

Following permit approvals, the applicant’s contractor installs the solar panel system.

Superior Safety Codes inspects the installed solar system and issues Permit Services Reports for the building and electrical permits

The applicant advises Planning and Development that the inspections have been completed and provides any additional documentation that may be needed to confirm the installed system size. The applicant will be asked to confirm whether grant payment will be made to the applicant (receipt of payment to contractor required) or directly to the applicant’s contractor (contractor invoice to applicant required).

Once confirmation is received, the Finance department will issue payment of the grant to either the applicant or the contractor.

Deadlines

Application for approval and payment of the Solar Installation Grant must be completed within eight months of notification of pre-approval. In order to meet this deadline and ensure all available funding is allocated in a timely manner, applicants must submit all required permit applications within four months of pre-approval.

Extensions may be granted in cases in which the project has been initiated but will take longer to complete than eight months if proof is provided to the City of Wetaskiwin.

If no proof is received that the project is underway, the grant monies may be awarded to another applicant.
