Council Statement: National Day of Truth and Reconciliation
Today, we recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and take time to reflect on the history and lasting impact of residential schools in Canada. While this day offers an important opportunity to remember and reflect, reconciliation is not limited to a single day. It is an ongoing commitment reflected in our everyday actions and willingness to listen and learn.
Reconciliation is about honouring the experiences and stories of the families and Survivors, acknowledging the intergenerational impacts of residential schools, and remembering those who never returned home. It calls on all of us to reflect on the past while contributing to a future grounded in understanding, respect, and connection.
These commemorations provide an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the enduring impacts of residential schools and to recognize the continued journey toward truth, healing, and reconciliation. Through continued learning, reflection, and action, we can help foster stronger relationships and support meaningful progress toward reconciliation.
