New roundabout sculpture to celebrate Wetaskiwin’s agricultural roots
The 50 Ave and 47 Street intersection roundabout will soon be home to a new art installation, named Bountiful by local artists Ken and Petra Mastel.
Council approved up to $50,000 from the Public Art Reserve for the project, which celebrates Wetaskiwin’s deep agricultural heritage while symbolizing continued growth and prosperity. Bountiful, which will stand at approximately 13 feet tall and 8 feet wide, will feature three golden heads of wheat protected by six satin-finished stainless steel leaves. Integrated LED lighting will transform the artwork after dark, gradually shifting from green to gold to evoke the ripening of crops at harvest time.
“Our sculpture acknowledges the homesteaders, farmers, ranchers, dairy producers, and others in agriculture whose hard work became the basis for all our other development,” said Ken Mastel. “Bountiful celebrates from where we have come and is a visual representation of the labour of sowing and reaping a blessed harvest.”

The sculptures' narrow design ensures drivers will be able to see around the roundabout while creating a meaningful and striking visual landmark that creates a unique visual experience at every angle.
The artists will be working with five local businesses for the fabrication and construction of the project to bring the sculpture to life. The approximate installation date is October 2026, although timelines will depend on fabrication schedules, supply chains, and weather.
The 2026 Roundabout Public Art Project was identified as a priority initiative under the City’s Public Art Program to enhance a prominent gateway location, contribute to community identity, and provide a lasting cultural asset for residents and visitors. Once installed, Bountiful will stand as a lasting tribute to Wetaskiwin's agricultural legacy and the people whose dedication continues to cultivate a strong and thriving community.
