May 3 -9: Emergency Preparedness Week

Emergency Preparedness Week is May 3  to 9. Wetaskiwin Fire Services would like to send out a reminder that emergencies can happen anytime, often without warning. Being prepared helps protect you, your family, and your community.

In Alberta, residents are encouraged to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours during an emergency, as services like power, water, and communications may be disrupted.

Taking simple steps now—like building a grab-and-go emergency kit—can make a significant difference when it matters most.

How to Build Your 72-Hour Emergency Go Kit

Your kit should include:

Basic Essentials

  • Water (at least 4 litres per person, per day)
  • Non-perishable food (3-day supply)
  • Manual can opener

Light, Communication & Power

  • Flashlight
  • Battery-powered or crank radio
  • Extra batteries
  • Phone charger/power bank

Health & Safety

  • First aid kit
  • Prescription medications
  • Personal hygiene items

Important Items

  • Copies of important documents (ID, insurance, etc.)
  • Emergency contact list
  • Cash in small bills

Clothing & Comfort

  • Change of clothes
  • Blanket or sleeping bag

Additional considerations

  • Supplies for children, seniors, or pets
  • Personal or medical needs
  • Masks, sanitizer, and basic supplies

Be Prepared. Stay Safe.

Preparedness doesn’t have to happen all at once—build your kit over time and store it in an easy-to-access location. A little preparation today can make all the difference tomorrow.
